Strelitzia is a genus of four species native to South Africa. It is named after the Meckenburg-Strelitz, birthplace of Queen Charlotte of the England. The genus is known as the bird of paradise flower because of its resemblance to a bird, which shares its name. This is a low maintenance plant that can be grown in gardens. When birds drink the nectar, petals open to cover their feet in pollen.
Strelitzias have a green 'beak' with a bright orange and blue crest, silvery-green leaves, and are available all year round, although there is limited availability in the summer. They are an impressive flower and often used by florists in dramatic floral arrangements and occasion office receptions.
