Narcissus Flowers
Flowers are extremely fragrant. Parts of plant are poisonous if ingested. All daffodils are narcissi but not all narcissi are daffodils. There are about 40 species of narcissus, most of which are native to Europe. Some of the most popular include daffodils, paper whites and jonquils – all of which have their own special characteristics. The common daffodil bears a single yellow flower. It differs from other narcissuses in having a long, bell-shaped corona. It is also called the lent lily or trumpet narcissus. The daffodil originates from South Western Europe, and is grown extensively in the UK. They are available from October to April. The Isles of Scilly start the season off in October with the tiny tazetta types. It finishes in April with large trumpet daffodils from Scotland.

The narcissus flower is considered one of the many flowers of love. It can also represent appreciation for another person’s beauty when given as a gift. Conversely, these flowers can be a sign of vanity, and can be sent as a warning to keep that vanity in check. In Chinese symbolism, the narcissus can represent the culmination of talent and hard work. In that light, these flowers might make an excellent gift to someone who is changing careers or pursuing their dreams.

Vase life around 3-6 days

Care and Handling

Cut 1/4 inch off stems and place in 70-75 F water with bulb flower preservative. Place daffodils in a separate holding container from other flowers, as they secrete a sap which shortens the vase life of other cut flowers, especially tulips. The sap will stop flowing about 6 hours after the stems are cut. Daffodils can then be safely combined with other flowers and used in mixed arrangements.
